During my recent visit to Beauty UK trade show at the NEC Birmingham, I tried and tested the Beautiful Brows semi permanent make up and was so impressed I just had to blog about it!

Whilst the majority of stands at the exhibition where aimed at salon businesses, therefore showcasing salon equipment and products, there were a few brands present who have products available to consumers direct. I was amazed by the domination of eyebrow products there – it seemed like every 5th stand were promoting their products. We know brows were very on trend in 2012, but it seems they continue to be into 2013.

My eyebrows were plucked at the age of 13 and seriously did not grow back no matter what I tried; so since I was in my twenties I have been shaping them with make up. I used Benefits Brow Zings kit for years and years, which I loved. The compact (complete with brushes, tweezers and a mirror) contained a powder and a wax which I found worked really well for me. Then, in the last two years everyone else has followed suit. From high end brands to very cheap and cheerful ones; everyone seems to have an eyebrow kit available. Nothing shifted me away from Benefit (having tried powders, waxes, pencils and felt pens) until I used the Look Beauty kit which was a bargain in Superdrug for £9. What I loved about that kit is that it contained a number of stencils – just what I needed to create the arch I don’t naturally have.

The problem I have been recently facing is the longevity of the product. I find that mid afternoon the powders wear off, leaving patchy brows which is not a great look! So, whilst at the Beauty UK show, I was happy to accept offers of demonstrations on me to see if there was anything better out there. Some of the brands were ridiculously priced (over £50 for a powder and brush) and some really disappointed me in how they applied the product leaving a messy finished look.

I then came across the Beautiful Brows stand; it looked stunning. Amazing branding, set up and a set of four demonstration areas with very friendly beauticians who didn’t pounce on me to try their product like the others did.

The lovely lady asked if I would like to know more about the product, to which of course I said yes! She explained how you get a little set of tweezers, brushes, powder, mirror - just like the Benefit Brow Zings but more luxurious and a better quality. The kit also contains a gorgeous pink toned powder highlighter and 3 very natural stencils (no scouse brow effect!)

The beautician patiently showed me, with a hand held mirror, how to apply using the stencil which was different to how I had previously used stencils. I tended to draw within them using a thin brush trying to keep in the template, yet she showed me that the best application is to get a medium sized fluffy brush and apply the powder back and forth all over the stencil to gain the best effect. This made a huge difference. No powder ‘leaked’ away from the set shape my brow needed to be which was different to others I had tried. The finished look was really natural – not too thick and the arch was the best I have seen, giving the whole area a lift.

The most appealing part of the product to me was the semi permanent aspect. I was of course a little sceptical as I have tried many semi permanent make up products which ironically seemed to last less than normal products. Well, today is Monday and I applied my Beautiful Brows at about 7:40am – it is now 8pm and they look as though I have just applied them. Its amazing! No smudges, no wearing, no gaps – and the colour hasn’t faded one little bit!

And of course the kit is beautifully designed and looks great! The powders can also be replaced meaning you don’t need to buy the kit in its entirety again.

I love this product – I know the kit will probably last me until the end of the year too, so a great choice. Highly recommended

Yesterday I was lucky enough to enjoy a whole afternoon of relaxation at KoKo Beauty Spa in Huddersfield. I heard about the quality of treatments from www.remiesluxuryblog.com and was invited to try out LVL lashes and the new A-Lift facelift treatment.

Living in Leeds, Huddersfield seemed a bit of a trek to me but it actually took me under 40 minutes in the car which is great. I was so impressed by the salon surroundings, treatments and staff that I will definitely be returning – it’s worth the journey for sure.

When I arrived, Kimberley made me feel very welcome and talked through a number of things she wanted to try out with me. The salon is well known for their massages but I was a little apprehensive given one I had a few years ago that actually made me feel worse, not better. Kim managed to convince me though, and I am very glad she did!

I started off at 1pm in a candle lit, relaxing room where I lay on the treatment bed. Kim ensured I was comfortable (not too hot etc.) and provided me with some water. I was instantly at ease. A very light all over massage was then given to me which completely relaxed me. The varying techniques Kim used really impressed me, from light strokes to deep tissue pressure – all very enjoyable and therapeutic.

At approx. 2pm Kim started with an eye treatment. My eyes are looking very tired and stressed of late so I knew this is exactly what I needed! First, Kim removed all make up and completed a very light facial using Decleor (I was nervous about this as my skin is so temperamental but my skin looks glowing and so far no breakouts!!!). Next, my eyes were lightly massaged which was the best experience I have ever had in a beauty salon! I liked how Kim was firm around the eye area as most beauticians I find are scared to touch this area, being very light-handed – Kim’s approach showed me she had confidence and knew what she was doing. My eye area was the exfoliated followed by a mask application. Whilst the mask was on, Kim massaged my arms and hands which was one of my favourite parts of the day.

Next up, was the A-Lift treatment. I had stressed that I didn’t want this as a full facial treatment in case my acne returned afterwards. So, Kim concentrated on my eye area only – and what a difference! My eyes look lifted and revitalised – I am amazed. My eyes were closed the entire time, and I didn’t even notice when this part of the treatment had started as it was so gentle – I thought Kim was still using her fingers! The treatment has nano current technology, which is a constant current meant to re-energise the cells. There were numerous stages within this 30 minute treatment; one of my favourite stages was the firm pressure and lifting technique which was applied over my eyebrows; lifting and pulling the area to activate the cell renewal – it felt great! This is something I will definitely have done again, perhaps before a big event, as it really made an instant difference to my tired eyes.

Finally, at around 3pm, I was taken to another treatment room which was well lit. Now for the part I had been excited for for quite some time! LVL lashes! Historically, I have had my lashes permed but I cannot find a salon anywhere that offers this anymore I don’t like false lashes, and having quite thick, long lashes anyway, I sometimes just need a bit of a lift and curl.

If anyone has ever had their eyelashes permed, this is way more relaxing and comfortable in comparison. There are no sticky, awkward rods to be applied and you cant feel a thing! Shields were applied around my lashes (I couldn’t feel them one bit!) and Kim spent time and effort separating them all ready for the solution to be applied. A perming lotion was applied to the roots of the lashes only, to assist them in staying in the position they were in. Whilst perming sets the lashes in a curling form around a rod, LVL offers a different (and much better) method of pulling the lashes up towards your brows. After 10 minutes of the perming lotion being on, a setting lotion was applied for a further 5 minutes. After this, my eye area was cleansed and these are the results……

I love them! I don’t need mascara and they look very natural. I will be having this treatment ever 6-8 weeks for sure!

I highly recommend this salon – having tried many over the years, this one has really stood out to me in terms of range of treatments, staff, interior and the entire experience.

There are sooooo many new products, colours and textures of make-up on the market it’s hard to choose what to go for. Obviously, it is advisable to choose colours which suit your hair and eye colour and skin tone, but there’s surely one of the below colour trends to suit…

Orange lipstick and nails

I’ve always loved orange shades; whether it’s painted on my lounge wall or brightening my nails. So I was glad to see it spring into fashion in 2013. There are now so many variations of the shade out there, there is defo a shade to suit you whatever your tone. But, if you don’t feel brave enough play it cool with an orange polish. You will be amazed at how many outfits and colours it actually matches and compliments. My fave nail colour are the oranges by Bio Sculpture gel and Models Own.

Longwear Pearly Eyeshadows

Early this year, I discovered the Chanel long lasting eyeshadows and wonder what I did without them! I have the nude pink which is great for everyday; the black for creating melt-proof smokey eyes on a night out and the most on trend of all…pearly white. The white for me can be a bit overpowering, so after much faffing around I discovered that this is best suited to me with simply dotted in the inner corners of the eyes with a gentle line of eyeliner and tons of mascara. There are many other brands out there, but you will not be disappointed with this and it lasts forever.

Peach & Apricot Blushes

I just love gel based or stained blushes as I want them to last all day and into the evening, so was very pleased when Benefit launched an apricot version – Cha Cha Chint. You can strengthen the colour if preferred, or keep it pale by just applying a dot on each cheek and blending. If you prefer powder blushes, Revlon do two or three peachy toned blushes that look beautiful and have buildable colour.

Brown Gel Eyeliners

Having worn eyeliner everyday for the last 10+ years, I always try the new forumla’s and colours, but have to say brown is the new black for me and even though my hair/lashes/brows are naturally black, the brown does suit me better. I love gel formula eyeshadows as they glide on so smoothly and for me last much longer. The brushes also allow for much more precise lines and I have even started venturing into a little ‘eye art’!

Stained Lips

Practically every brand has a stained lip product on the market at the moment. I have tried them all but the Maybelline one for me is the most natural and long lasting. Having said that, there is a lovely orange/nude Rimmel shade which is nice and I found a great pink one by Primark last week for only £1.50!

For quite some time now, I have fancied getting a bunny. I didn’t grow up with pets and now, at 32 living alone, I think it would be a good time for me to get a little furry friend!

I chose a bunny because I am at work long hours Monday-Friday and they are fairly low maintenance and low in cost; especially when compared to a cat or dog.

I know a few people who got their bunnies from a breeder in Leeds, so I visited her last Monday. One little fella took an instant like to me and even drifted off a bit whilst laid on my chest Here he is…a ‘black otter’ bred Mini Lop at only 8 weeks old!

I have been trying to do as much research as possible to help me understand what’s involved in looking after a bunny, but short of cute pics online and awfully designed websites, I have had to take my advice from the breeder. Obviously I don’t want to pester her from now on, so I have decided to provide help and regular updates on here from the day I get my bunny! This will be aimed at anyone else who may be wondering what’s involved in setting up a hutch, bringing bunny home for the first time, bonding, litter training etc and will all be based on my own learning’s and experience.

I will also be sharing extra cute pics way too often I imagine, so follow me on Instagram to see those http://instagram.com/slstevo

As most of you know by now, my hair is pretty important to me – just in a way that I always want it to look shiny and healthy, but hey who doesn’t. Finding the right hair products to deliver this is tricky and as a beauty blogger I must try about 3-5 new products per month; the bulk of them being a disappointment.

A haircare range that never disappoints me is L’Anza. The only downfall being the availability to buy offline (selected salons only) and the price range is on the higher end of the scale – but worth every penny I may add.

A few months ago, L’Anza launched a new range named Healing Nourish. The range contains a shampoo, conditioner and treatment spray and is aimed at those with thinning hair or those experiencing hair loss. Now, at the time I first used this my hair was already in great condition and was definately not thinning – although I always have suffered with hair all over the floor and hairbrushes after washing and drying each day :/

I was instantly impressed with how ‘looked after’ and thick my hair felt. Usually, volumising products seem to coat the hair strands therefore making your hair feel a little heavy and not as clean as I would like.

A few weeks ago, I experienced quite a disaster at the hairdressers when I decided to take my naturally jet black hair and lighten all over to a chestnut brown. The hours worth of bleach left my hair horrificly weak and breaking at the slightest touch. Not only that, but the split ends were visible which was particularly upsetting for me!

I reached for this luxurious shampoo and conditioner due (which I may add now that I use L’Anza once a week as a luxury treatment rather than everyday; just because it feels so expensive and nourishing). My hair actually felt moisturised and almost like it was being wrapped up in cotton wool and taken care of, from the moment the shampoo lathered into my scalp.

I shampoo’d twice; once to get rid of the product build up and again to actually cleanse. The stimulating shampoo removes follicle-clogging sebum, residues and DHT and let me tell you, you really can feel this happening. The scent is not something I usually go for – it’s quite minty and very strong. However, it was something that didn’t put me off due to the fact that it felt so invigorating. Also, the scents didn’t stay in my hair once blow dried so they didn’t clash with my perfumes and other scents which are much softer. The conditioner was next up and I applied it to the ends rubbing it in for a few minutes and finishing by massaging my scalp for 30 seconds. I rinsed and it felt squeaky clean. The conditioner works to deliver key nutrients necessary for healthy hair growth, so used over time will help my weakend hair and encourage growth.

After blow drying, my hair looked bouncy and shiny and exceptionally healthy – I was very impressed (as I always am with L’Anza products).

The range aims to deliver:

Anagen 7 System extends hair’s growth phase

Transdermal Delivery provides deep nourishment

Healing reduces hair loss

Treats all types of thinning hair

Drug-free formulas without negative side effects

And I can say it really does help the condition and growth of hair. Don’t be put off by the fact it is aimed to thinning hair and hair loss, as it produces great results on normal hair too; as I found out pre-hair disaster.

Another range by L’Anza highly recommended. My favourite range still has to be the Healing Volume range as it kept my hair thick without weighing it down after using it everyday. Next on the list is the Healing Strength range to help my weakened hair gain it’s strength back.

Have you tried any L’Anza products? What is your fave?

After many attempts to gain glowing, clear skin I think I have finally found the right products to achieve this!

Back in summer 2012, I switched back to Origins which I used from 2005-2009, and got great results as you can see here: http://www.slstevo.com/2012/06/origins-skincare-routine/ Then I started getting bad skin again, maybe stress, maybe testing so many different make-up products who knows – but I did the usual thing of trying many different ranges. I started with Estee Lauder but after a number of weeks I started getting bumps and spots, so I panicked and moved on to ProActiv which worked a treat and then ran out! Then I found a rose and glycerin face wash which was lovely….then ran out! Basically, for months I have been trying and messing with many products to remove my make-up each day!

On my birthday this year (Feb, 8th) I met with Chloe from Origins as she wanted to talk to me about their new Plantscription range. We ate a lovely lunch at Harvey Nichols Leeds and spent the first half hour having a good old gossip before getting down to business. I explained my skin complaints and that at the slightest change of product or emotion I appeared to develop breakouts which resulted in me using more and more spot treatments in panic to get rid of them.

Chloe presented me with the new Plantscription moisturiser, eye cream and treatment lotion. The whole range is aimed at those starting to see wrinkles and lines and is supposed to be the ultimate in anti-aging treatments. At first, I was unenthusiastic as even though at 32 I am seeing fine lines under the eyes, it is not my main concern at all. I had a little try of the products on the back of my hand and loved both the textures and the scent.

That evening I removed my make-up with Origins Clean Energy cleansing oil which is just fantastic at removing all make-up including waterproof mascara and eyeliner and smells divine. I followed with the Plantscription treatment lotion which is like a cleansing milk yet is promoted as a toner. I applied a few drops to a cotton wool pad and smoothed it over my entire face and neck; it left my face feeling super clean and energised. I then followed with the moisturiser (note: even though I have acne prone skin, I do not use the oil free formula). I use about as much as a 5p piece and rub into my fingers before massaging thoroughly into my face and neck. To finish, I tapped a tiny amount of the eye cream gently under each eye. I followed this strict routine morning and night with no use of any other products, medication or light treatments.

After 3 days, I noticed that all red marks from blemishes developed over recent weeks were disappearing fast and my skin overall just looked fresh and clear. I was obviously very happy yet confused as these products aren’t targeted for spots and blemishes. It has now been one month since I started using this routine morning and night, and in the entire time I have only had two spots of which appeared and vanished within 2-3 days and didn’t require much concealing as they had historically. The overall look of my skin seems plumper and the small lines that were starting to get noticable under my eyes were no longer present with my make-up on. My cheeks appear to have a natural rosy glow to them now also – overall I am in love with this range and am so pleased Chloe brought the samples along with her as I genuienly would never have purchased these products as they are anti-aging which as I say, is not a major concern for me.

I contacted Chloe to tell her how delighted and baffled I was! Chloe spoke to the Origins Education Expert Bev who explained “I think that it’s due to the Raspberry Plant Stem Cells. They have the ability to repair cellular damage and extend the life of a healthy cell. The product is in no way targeted to acne or blemished skin but is highly regenerative which may be the reason why it has had such a positive effect on Sarah’s skin.”

So, there you have it – from all the ingrediants I have researched for acne prone skin, raspberry has never come up but this is a little saviour! The treatment lotion I think makes a huge difference along with the moisturiser; which has key ingrediants of Jasmine Flowers, soothing Caffeine and calming Aloe Leaf. I would love to try the cleanser next so I am using the entire range….I shall add to my shopping list!

I urge anyone wanting better skin to try this range – if it seems too much to fork out on, pop to your nearest Origins counter and chat with the assistant there; I am sure they will pop a few days worth of products into sample pots to try and you will be as amazed with them as I am!

Enjoy x

So, I have been feeling rather rotten for the last few weeks with a kidney infection which left me really run down and full of cold towards the back end of last week – just as Benefit were due in town!

Benefit are hosting more and more blogger events which is great but they’re not often in Yorkshire, so I was excited to receive an invitation to the launch of their new hydrating concealer ‘Fake Up’ at Malmaison, Leeds on Friday 8th March.

I had struggled all day at work and all I wanted was my bed, but I was so excited to hear about the new products and see the Benefit girls again (love Lisa and was great to meet Racheal!). I arrived at 6pm but felt so poorly that I was in my car an hour later. However, that was enough time to put some faces to names (Remie, I was so pleased to meet you at last!) and learn all about their latest product innovation.

As you all know, I am a huge and loyal Benefit Cosmetics fan. As far as their foundations and concealers go, I have had mixed experiences however. I loved their no discontinued Non-Fiction foundation as the high coverage, long lasting formula was perfect for me and I swear by Lemon Aid eye colour corrector/primer and Bo-Ing concealer, yet haven’t as yet made their Oxygen Wow foundation work for me (looks great initially, but for me wears off and doesn’t provide heavy enough coverage). I always love a new concealer though so when I started to hear about Fake Up on Twitter I was eager to try it.

The concealer comes in three shades just like Bo-ing (light, medium and deep) in a neat, sleek silver tube and us beauty bloggers were lucky enough to be provided with all three to test – despite Lisa colour matching us. Lisa showed us how we can use all three shades to create the Kim K countouring effect. This was something I was really keen on trying, yet after using the concealer under my eyes for a few days now, I may just use this technique on the odd occasion as the formula is quite moisturising and may be too heavy for my acne-prone skin.

Having a cold and looking absolutely worn out, was the perfect opportunity for me to try this concealer out. Even though I looked mega pasty, the light shade when I first tried that out, was appearing a little grey so I opted for the medium shade which seems to have a slight peachy tone so lifts the area for me. I apply this before foundation as it’s so moisturising I want the ingrediants of vitamin E and apple seed extract to sink into my skin. It really does help the appearance of dark circles, but what I liked most about it was 1) how easy it was to apply (it felt like a gel) and 2) how hydrating it was under the eyes – I wasn’t left with an creases and it didn’t form in my fine lines – perfect!

The most unique element of this product, like nothing I have seen before, is that the product is mainly a conditioning balm with only a small part of the concealer visible in the core. At first I was concerned that there wasn’t enough concealer, but as soon as you glide the product on you get a great amount of coverage surrounded by soft and smoothing balm – everything mixes together and the finish is just gorgeous!

So, all in all I would recommend this and will defo be re-purchasing when it runs out. I will try the contouring effect with the deep and light shades but as the product is so moisturising will only try this from time to time rather than as a daily look through fear of growing blemishes! Also, if you do choose to use this on your eyelids it may slip a little as mine did when I tried it yesterday on its own – great coverage and effect but creased after an hour or so and I had to keep rubbing / blending the product in. If you apply over the entire eye area I would just suggest applying powder and eyeshadows on top of the eyelid as this will keep the product in place.

Another great job by Benefit – I imagine many brands will follow with similar product formulas in the coming weeks…

I was lucky enough to be sent a sample of the L’Anza Keratin Healing Oil Hair Treatment. L’Anza is my fave haircare brand and when my budget will stretch, I choose the Healing Strength range which strengthens and provides volume like no other.

The product comes in a glass bottle which contains 100ml and looks very luxurious. The bottle isn’t so much travel friendly, but I always take plastic travel bottles with me whenever I go away and this can be easily dispensed into one of those. The first thing I noticed and loved was the scent. I have never smelt anything so delicious and strong! This is the only hair oil that keeps your hair smelling clean and feminine until the next time you wash it. It is hard to describe the smell but it does remind me a little of Monoï Oil. The ingrediants include; Abyssinian Flower Oil, Coffee Seed Oil, Acai Fruit Oil and Babassu Kernel Oil.

The first time I used this I placed a 10p coin sized amount in my hands, rubbed together and smoothed from half way down my hair, rubbing into the ends. This was a little too much for me, as although it didn’t appear greasy, my hair felt a bit weighed down. I tried it the next day using half that amount and found it was perfect.

It smoothes my hair and seems to close the cuticles meaning my split ends seem to just disappear! My hair is made incredibly shiny. The oil is rapidly absorbed by my hair which I love, as other hair oils I have tried simply seem to just sit there on the hair surface which ends up looking greasy.

I use hair tools every day, so my hair at the end just look a little damaged. But as I am always in a rush in a morning, I do forget to use hair protectant sprays (maybe also due to the fact that I have never found one that doesn’t make my hair sticky or hard). That’s why I love this oil - it provides a great UV and heat protection without changing the hair texture in a way that may alter my styling.

One other thing I have noticed is that when applied to wet hair, it takes me less time to blow dry it! It has also made a difference in these cold, rainy months in keeping the moisturein my hair – meaning less frizz.

My absolute fave thing about this product however (apart from the stunning smell of it!) is the fact that it somehow gives my hair loads of natural volume. Whether I leave my hair to dry naturally to create subtle waves, or blow dry into a style the volume increases quite noticably meaning less products for me to add to my styling routine which is great. I think this oil is perfect when applied to wet hair and left to work whilst the hair dries naturally; I get the most gorgeous natural wavses. If I don’t have time in a morning to let my hair dry naturally, I apply the oil, blow dry, then use a curling wand to get big waves. I then add a teeny weeny bit more oil to my hands and run my fingers through the ends – it really keeps the style into the night too.

Such a wonder product!

There are so many uses for this oil. Here are a few tips I use at the moment:

After applying to your hair, you will have oil residue on your hands still. Rather than wash this away or rub off onto a towel, I smooth into dry areas such as feet and elbows.

For an intensive treatment, massage it into your scalp before bed, leave overnight and wash your hair as normal the next day. The shine and condition looks like hair extensions it’s that good!

If your hair and body feel dry, add one small drop to a running bath. The scent will relax you and you will be moisturised from head to toe!

Rub the oil into your hands until the oil feels slightly warm – I don’t know why, but this delivers the best results for me.

If you feel you have used too much, apply some dry shampoo to absorb the oil and when you next wash your hair, wash it with shampoo twice then only a little conditioner.

The oil retails at around £30 but will last you at least 12 months if using daily, as you only need the tinest drop to achieve amaze results.

If you want to find out a bit more about L’Anza you can visit their website here.

Have you tried this? What’s your fave oil?

Want to acheive a natural, striking Christmas Day look that lasts? Then you’ve come to the right place!

Greetings card company Hallmark have created an online advent calendar full of festive tips, including crafts, recipes and beauty tips (provided by me!).

My first video on there is ‘Fabulously Festive Christmas Day Make-Up’ which you can view here: http://advent-calendar.hallmark.co.uk on day 6.

Here are my top take out tips on how to acheive a super long lasting festive look to last 7am way into the early hours of Boxing Day with no need for touch ups (trust me…it’s tried and tested from over the years!)

Create soft waves the night before (try sleep in rollers) then in the morning simply apply a small amount of serum or hair oil. I use L’Anza Keratin Healing Oil which smells amazing until you next wash your hair and keeps hair soft, nourished and keeps the curls set for hours.

Use a primer such as Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer at around £30 or a cheaper, fantastic alternative Nivea Express Hydration Primer which retails at arouond a fiver (you can get a free sample here: freebie). Make sure you really massage the primer into your skin and leave it for at least 5 minutes before apply your base.

Choose a long lasting foundation – there’s so many available, so you can choose what suits your skin best. Personally, I can’t live without Vichy Dermablend Fluid Foundation which you can find in Boots for around £15. A cheaper alternative that works just as well in terms of lasting 24+ hours and covering, is Revlon Colorstay (£10-13) just beware this can be a little drying. The key to long lasting foundation is how you apply it – use a stippling brush and buff in small circles all over, then dab and push the product into your skin to really get it into every pore!

Use an eye primer after foundation that has a yellow tone. Nothing compares to Benefit Lemon Aid.

You will naturally get red flushed cheeks. My advice is not to counteract this, but to embrace it! Use a stain to replicate the natural look and ensure it simply does not budge. Again, a Benefit product that is a cut above the rest…Benetint! Apply it with a make-up sponge and dab and push it right into your skin!

Go for subtle glitter on the eyes. The video will show you step-by-step application. Products used were: Chanel ILLUSION D’OMBRE long wear luminous eyeshadow in shade 81 Fantasme, Mac pigments in Copper Sparkle and Chocolate Brown, Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner in Midnight Cowboy, Bobbi Brown Long-Wear gel eyeliner in Espresso Ink and finally Max Factor Masterpiece Max (waterproof) in black.

For the lips, again I would go for a stain. Try Revlon Just Bitten Lip Balm and Stain in Beloved or Benetint.

You can find the Hallmark advent calendar on their site throughout December, 2012, so be sure to check it every day and don’t forget to share the content with your friends.

Happy festivities

Well, who would’ve thought it? Vaseline – the most basic, cheap beauty product happens to double up as an acne cure!

I’ve been suffering from hormonal acne for weeks now since coming off Yasmin. It’s been so upsetting I’ve contemplating going back on the pill, but I feel so much better health-wise that it’s just not worth it.

Unfortunately, the Liz Earle range I recently tested brought me out in inflammed pimples. My contacts there were so considerate and helpful though and advised me what to do to help my skin and understand which of their products was having this effect.

I stopped all Liz Earle products and planned to wash my face with cold water and a muslin cloth and nothing else. Until I had a chat with my mother-in-law (to be!). Mrs Lubomski told me how she has removed her make-up for years using Vaseline and cotton wool pads – nothing else. I wasn’t sure at first; your gut reaction is that Vaseline is oily and would only worsen the spots I had. I was so desperate though, I thought i’d give it a go. So, off to the bathroom we went…

I scooped a good dollop of Vaseline and rubbed between my fingertips, then started to massage onto dry skin over my make-up. It felt kind of relaxing and I think the massaging effect soothed the sore skin too. After a good rub, I used two cotton wool pads and gently wiped the make-up off my face. In total, it took 3 goes at this before my skin was squeaky clean. This is because the make-up I wear is meant to last hours and I wanted to make sure that not one ounce of dirt was left on my face.

My skin felt amazing straight away…Both boyf and Ma Lubomski agreed! My skin felt really moisturised but not at all greasy. The fine lines I had on my forehead and under my eyes were also immediately less prominent. And more importantly, the pimples seemed calmer.

I’m about 2 weeks into this new routine, and although I still have two or three spots, it’s nothing in comparison to what I had before.

I’d recommend this skincare routine to you all to try! A huge tub cost me just over £1 in Boots. It’s also great for the night’s where you’re too tired to remove your make-up, because all you need do is sit in bed, smoother your face in Vaseline and wipe it off. Done.

Try this little beauty secret today! Oh, and Vaseline…you should promote this more; I am amazed at the results x

It was back in November 2011, that I was invited to the launch of the 1st Yorkshire Fake Bake boutiques. The event was held in Selfridges, Manchester and I got to try relaxing treatments, amazing products and meet the wonderful James Read.

I can only apologise to my PR contacts working on this event for only just blogging about this At the time of the event I was 6 months into singledom at 30 (which sucked!) and whilst the event itself perked me up, I have not felt up to blogging at all since. I am determined to have the best year yet in 2012 though so wanted to share my experience with you all and hope it’s not too late!

The idea behind these boutiques are for busy ladies to get great quality beauty treatments on the go. They provide a one-stop to beauty shop ideal for preparation before a night out or big event. It completes a perfect girly shopping day – with champagne on arrival and a chance to put your feet up and be pampered.

I was lucky enough to sample a few treatments. First of all I had a simple, but always needed and loved, manicure and nail paint. I chose a gorgeous natural nail colour by Leighton Denny and the beautician added delicate diamanté at the tip of each nail. The manicure lasted up to 10 days so I was really pleased with that.

I then tried some permanent lashes as I wouldn’t usually experiment with these. Having naturally black hair means I have dark lashes and they are fairly long so mascara usually provides the impact I need for nights out. As lashes become increasingly popular, and as a beaut blogger, I felt it only right to test and review these. It was a relaxing treatment that lasted about 1 hour. The beautician slowly and delicately applied individual lashes which were glued (using semi-permanent glue) to the base of each natural lash. The outcome was amaze! When I went to work everyone noticed (yes, even the guys!) but yet all agreed they looked completely natural. Almost 3 weeks passed and they were still looking great – and with such large lashes I didn’t need eyeliner or mascara so my make-up application time was reduced which was an added bonus. The lashes slowly started to shed after 4 weeks but I made a stupid mistake by removing my eye make-up after a rum too many with Vaseline forgetting it would dilute the glue and remove my lashes. So, I experienced a little disaster when my natural lashes came out at the same time leaving me feeling very bare! I missed my lashes after only a few hours so went to Mint Nail and Beauty Spa in Leeds to be rescued! The girls there were great and simply added a few thick, individual lashes to the gaps I had. These lasted around 2 weeks and provided me with enough time for my natural lashes to grow back. So, overall girls, I would highly recommend lash extensions but warn you to be prepared to spend extra care when removing make-up (purchase wipes specifically for false lashes or at the very least choose products with no trace of oil) and do not – however much you are tempted – remove the extensions at home. You really do need a professional to apply lash removal gel and careful take them off without damaging your natural lashes.

Finally, I was lucky enough to spend some quality time with James Read. We chatted about my skin type and fake tan techniques, and he demonstrated some of the Fake Bake tanning products which I am now a huge fan of. My favourite is the Flawless Self Tanning Liquid which ticks all the boxes of easy to apply, natural (yet dark) colour, nice scent and long lasting. I use this probably about every 14 days or so and I find it fades so naturally you can’t actually tell it is fake tan. I apply this with the tanning mitt and do find it creates a much smoother and streak-free result – as well as limited stained hands and fingers!

Overall, a great experience I was lucky enough to attend and something I will certainly visit the next time I’m shopping in Manchester. We just need one in Leeds now!

So, as you all know by now I have been experiencing problem skin for about 2 years now. I go through phases where it can be clear for weeks but then have a bout of trouble where I can’t find a clear patch on my face I found the Pro-Active range worked well but occasionally couldn’t use the moisturiser (too drying) and the toner ran out after a matter of weeks. I moved on to Estee Lauder, which helped for a week or so then broke me out, then more recently tried the Bobbi Brown Extra range which has erupted my skin like nothing ever before.

Feeling a bit down and out about it, given I am 31 and really should have calm skin by now! I wandered to my closest Origins counter as I recalled having great skin when using their Checks & Balances foaming face wash.

The lady was really helpful and sat me down with a skin consultation showing me all products and why certain ones would be good or bad for me. I really enjoyed hearing all about the different products on offer – classic and new – and trying them was all part of the experience for me.

After purchasing a number of products and trying them over the last week or so, I have seen a vast improvement to my skin and actually look forward to taking my make-up off at the end of the day now. Here’s a brief overview of the products I am loving and why:

Checks & Balances Foaming Wash (£17)

This is the best foaming face wash I have ever tried and I do wonder why it isn’t a constant in my skincare routine. Adding a small 5p piece worth of wash to damp skin results in luxurious, minty fragranced foam that for me feels like it is really deep cleansing. With other washes I tend to need to wash my face twice; once to take my make-up off and again to actually cleanse – but there is no need for this with Checks & Balances which is great. My skin is left squeaky clean and refreshed without feeling tight.

Clean Energy Cleansing Oil (£17)

This is a new product for me, and I have taken to using this in the evening now to remove make-up and the Checks & Balances in a morning to freshen up. My skin had broken out with soooo many bumps and spots after the Bobbi Brown range, I really didn’t know what to do. I was nervous about using oil as I associate oil with oiliness and spots, but this really isn’t the case. The oil is packed full of natural ingredients such as olive oil, sesame oil, sage oil, lemon oil, orange oil, lavender oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil and rosemary oil which are all non-comedogenic (meaning they won’t clog your pores, leading to spots). The scent is so invigorating, the application feels like such a treat – and at £17 I think it’s great value for money as I know this bottle will last months and months as you only need the tiniest drop of oil for your whole face and neck. After you have massaged this all over dry skin, you can either remove with cotton wool pads or wash off – I like to add water (which produces a milky consistency) then flannel off with warm water. My sore, spotty skin instantly felt soothed and nourished and my spots really did appear to heal overnight.

Purifying Tonic (£20)

Now, I’ve never been one for toners as I have found they really dry out my skin. Having said that, for the past 6-8 months I have been using rosewater on an evening which has moisturised my skin and helped clear up blemishes. I was shown this product at the Origins counter and thought it was overpriced I must say. I returned home and carried out a bit of online research and decided to give it a go however. I loved the fact the ingredients were 95% organic and that it was packed with willow bark which is essentially Salicylic acid – the ingredient which makes Pro Active a success. I use this morning and night on a cotton wool pad after cleansing and before moisturising and find it refreshing and skin clearing. A lovely addition to my routine.

Out of Trouble Mask (£19)

This was the first product I grabbed to be fair! The smell and texture is, to me, an exact replica of Eve Lom’s rescue mask which is around £50. The Zinc Oxide and Sulfur help battle your spots, and the calming Camphor help ‘push back’ the ones which are starting to develop which is my fave part of this mask! You apply to clean, dry skin and leave for 10 minutes – although I am naughty and tend to leave longer when my face is a spotty mess like it has been this week! Other masks I have used either bring out more spots or cause irritation to existing ones. This calms everything down and the only way I can describe it, is like I say it pushes the spots back into your skin not out! Marvelous.

High Potency Nit-A-Mins Oil Free Cream (£32)

Now, as far as moisturises go I had stayed clear of them for years as everything I tried has given me spots. Boo. My skin is very dry with a tendency to flake though, so as well as being sensitive and spotty it does need moisture. I read last year about Oilatum Natural Repair Face Cream (£7 from Boots) and can NOT believe the results of this, so have been using religiously on a morning only (works as a perfect make-up primer too). For evenings, I do like to fake tan and apply spot creams etc. so I tend to not moisturise. But I remember using my mum’s Nit-A-Mins cream when I lived at home and loving the aromatherapy scent and clear skin results. So, I re-purchased and am already really pleased with the results. I think the large tub is great value for money as I expect it to last all year. There is now an oil-free gel like formula (which is what I purchased) so this is just perfect for my unbalanced skin. You only need a teeny bit too, especially if acne-prone so just dot a little all over your face and neck and massage away before sleepy time. After the busy lifestyle I appear to have developed this cream seems to give me a real boost by the time I awake, no matter how little sleep I have! Try it….you will love it

Look out for great offers at your Origins counter and their website as you can usually save yourself a small fortune by buying starter packs.

Have you tried Origins? What is your fave and is there anything you’d recommend I try next?

Sarah x
