My World Without Bottles
As some of you may already know, I suffer from a lifetime condition called Interstitial Cystitis. I was diagnosed in November, 2007 when I had a large operation on my bladder. Since then I take daily medication, homeopathic remedies for flare ups and most importantly drink a lot of fluids every day. So, when I saw Sodastream were re-launching their product (which brought back great childhood memories) coupled with a great campaign promoted by Erin O’Connor I was immediately interested in learning more.
I am a little ashamed to say that I do use bottled water; mainly so I can monitor my intake which has to be 2 litres a day – doctors orders! Since getting the new Sodastream (Eco limited edition model made from 85% recycled material) I have not only enjoyed making my drinks but have probably saved a small fortune and the planet too!
The bottle holds enough fluid to get me through a busy morning at work and will last up to 3 years without the need for replacement! There are lots of yummy drinks you can make, including lightly flavoured apple & mango or pink grapefruit sparkling water…or even energy drinks such as cola or XStream energy! The syrups come in 500ml bottles and each bottle will make up to 12 litres of soda.
The product, as you can see from the photo below, is sleek, compact and minimalistic which was perfect for my kitchen! My boyfriend and I tested it for the first time together and were amazed at how quick and easy it was to make a drink! Simply fill a bottle with tap water, attach the bottle to the machine, push the button to fizz up your water, add a little syrup and just twist your bottle upside down a couple of times to mix the drink! Easy!
The drinks are yummy – am dying to try the ‘clear’ syrup range – and the bubbles do last a long time. We often make a bottle up in the evening and place it in the fridge overnight for use the next day…still tastes as good.
So, there is a more important element to all of this. By using the Sodastream we can help free the world from bottles. This product offers an alternative to plastic bottles and cans and actually makes 60 liters (or 180 cans)! Research found that over 13.1 billion bottles (500 per household) are used annually in the UK. What’s worse is that 43% of consumers recycle less that 50% of all the bottle they use.
Erin comments: “We take plastic bottles for granted in our everyday lives but it’s easy to forget that plastic bottle overuse and wastage can clog up our landfill sites, seap toxic chemicals into the ground and take thousands of years to decompose. By precycling you can help tackle the problem by avoiding plastic in the first place. Sodastream is one way to help reduce plastic bottle waste in our everyday lives.”
